Planning a funeral can feel daunting, but taking the time to consider your options can help you make informed decisions that honour their memory. At Heritage Funeral Services we aim to make the process as straightforward as possible, by explaining all of your options and giving you time to make the choices that feel right to you.
Types of Funeral
Traditional Funeral, Memorial Service, or Direct Cremation or Burial
A traditional funeral is usually a formal service that is held in a church, chapel or service room [link to service room page], and is followed by a burial or cremation. A Memorial Service is more of a celebration of life that is held after the burial or cremation, and a ‘Direct’ option is a simple cremation or burial held without any service. There is no correct choice, and you can select the option that you believe your loved one would have preferred.
Cremation or Burial
Whichever route you choose, a decision needs to be made about their final resting location. If your loved one is to be cremated, you can choose whether to scatter, bury or keep the ashes. If you choose a burial, you must choose where the resting place will be. If you have an existing lair, we will need the title deeds, or we can assist you with purchasing a new lair.
Choosing the Officiant
If you choose to have a service, we are fortunate in Scotland to have many choices for who can officiate a funeral. Religious leaders, civil celebrants, Humanist celebrants, and even friends and family members may lead a funeral service.
Flowers, Music & Orders of Service
Once the bigger decisions are made, we can support you through smaller choices such as floral tributes, newspaper notices, orders of service and memorial cards, and music selections. While the choices can seem overwhelming, let our experienced staff guide you through the steps you need to take.
Reception
Perhaps you have a special place in mind to return to following the service, or maybe you just need somewhere local and appropriate to the occasion. We work closely with local establishments to ensure that there is a range of packages available that make things simple for you and your family during what is a difficult time.
